Ahhhhh superfoods… once a term used solely within the walls of organic health food shops, you can’t go to your local cafe anymore without spotting kale or quinoa on the menu. And while we’re still all about our chia puddings and crunchy kale salads – we are always keen to hear about new food discoveries and their health possibilities.
And when it comes to unique new superfoods, 2016 is set to bring the goods. They may be strange, hard-to-pronounce and even a little creepy. Either way, these nutrition-packed foods are going to be the ones to watch.
Cricket Protein Powders
Okay, we know it sounds pretty gross. Ha ha ha! But believe it or not, these little creatures are actually nutritional powerhouses. Packed full of protein and 2.2 times more iron than spinach, cricket powder (yes, if you’re still reading this in disbelief, we really do mean the insects) is perfect for those who like to workout and stay lean.
This sweet, delicious fruit grows on the Baobab tree in Africa but is usually sold in powder form. The powder is made from the white fruit pulp, which is said to have fantastic nutritional and probiotic qualities. With a sweet, caramel, sherbet-like taste, it’s the perfect addition to any healthy dessert or snack.
With the importance of gut-health now firmly on our radar – keeping your insides clean is an absolute must. That’s where Bentonite clay comes in. It’s traditionally used to promote internal cleansing and is slowly becoming a key part of many detox diets. It has also been said to help protect the immune system and fight off toxins.
Move over coconut water, there’s a new kid on the healthy water block! It’s called birch water and it’s probably one of the healthiest waters yet. It’s made from the sap of the birch tree and is said to help treat headaches, eczema, dandruff, liver disease and even reduce cellulite. We are so on board.

Also known as the ‘turnip cabbage’, Kohlrabi is set to try and take the place of kale in 2016. This powerful vege is rich in Vitamin C and helps to regulate fluids in the body. Eating enough of this stuff can help to keep your skin soft, smooth and wrinkle free – particularly around the eye area.
Lucuma (pronounced Loo-koo-ma) is definitely our new favourite when it comes to powdered fruity goodness. This lightweight, raw powder is rich in antioxidants that may help to prevent disease and slow down the ageing process (hasta la vista wrinkles), as well as containing complex carbohydrates for energy and proper brain function.

Sacha Inchi Seeds
This crunchy, nutty flavoured seed is a traditional Incan snack that grows in the Peruvian rainforest. Roast them and sprinkle them over salads and yoghurt, or simply eat them all on their own! Rich in omega-3 acids and protein, they make for the perfect guilt-free snack.
While Aloe juice made a brief appearance a few years back, 2016 is set to be the year for this sticky green liquid to shine. This power plant is packed full of vitamins B, C and E, along with a folic acid, which helps to boost immunity and keep your skin glowing.
