As you guys might already know, 2016 is set to be the year of ‘bowl’ foods. There’ll bliss bowls, brekky bowls, sushi bowls and smoothie bowls. But out of all the nutritious, protein-packed lunch bowls out there – Poke Bowls have got to be the coolest.
Let’s start with the key ingredient – Ahi poke. This famous Hawaiian appetizer is made from raw, marinated tuna. Traditionally, the delicious flavour comes from a marinade of low-sodium soy sauce, seaweed, dried peppers and sesame oil. So as you can see, it’s easy AND yum.
When you put together a Poke Bowl however, that’s when the fun really starts. There’s basically no limit and no rules! Some common fillers include:
♥ Freshly chopped veggies
♥ Avocado slices
♥ Pineapple cubes
♥ Mango pieces
♥ Pesto zucchini noodles
♥ Quinoa
♥ Brown rice
♥ Edamame
♥ Seaweed
Not only is this new food trend super yummy, it’s healthy as well. For every 28 grams of ahi tuna, 24 grams is protein. That’s about 50% of your daily protein intake in one go. This same serving size only has about 1 gram of saturated fat and less than 2 grams of carbs. Hellooo skinny-town!
On top of all that, Ahi poke also contains vitamins B-12, C and D, iron, zinc, folate, magnesium, manganese, potassium and niacin, along with 8% of your Vitamin A intake. Combined with all those other nutritious ingredients, poke bowls are about as healthy as it gets.
