We don’t need to tell you how much we love coffee. We have at least one (ok fine, maybe two) cups every day and we often joke that for us, it’s akin to water and green smoothies AKA we can’t survive without it.
So every time a new coffee trend pops up on Instagram, we’re obviously always interested to see what it’s like and whether it’s worth it (bulletproof coffee is an example that comes to mind and FYI, we love it.)
The latest coffee trend that you may or may not have heard about is mushroom coffee. Yep, that’s not a typo… mushroom coffee is now a thing. The trend comes from the Finnish company, Four Sigmatic, and the founders claim that mushroom coffee will give you increased focus and concentration as well as reduced inflammation and better immunity.
Whilst it may sound dodgy, the magic mushrooms Four Sigmatic are talking about are processed by liquefying and then drying out different types of mushrooms to make an extract which is then mixed with regular coffee. Although we are yet to try mushroom coffee, we presume it tastes like instant coffee combined with a mushroom soup. Not the worst flavour combination but certainly not the best! The mushroom blend is believed to help regulate blood sugar levels while the alkaline chaga mushroom (a type of mushroom) helps to counteract the acid of the coffee that can give you the jitters and an upset stomach. It can also increase your energy levels and improve your metabolism.
Four Sigmatic, sell sachets of mushroom coffee and each serving contains 500mg of organically grown and dual extracted mushrooms. For the non-coffee drinkers, don’t worry! You can also get the mushroom benefits with their mushroom hot chocolate… yum!
At the moment, the jury is still out on mushroom coffee and we’d be keen to try it but we don’t think it’ll ever replace our favourite piccolo latte!
