Thanks to the ubiquity of screens, accessible wifi and the high-stress pace of well, life, winding down is not such an easy feat anymore…
And as a result, the search for rest, respite and a solid moment of peace and quiet seems to have turned into some sort of never ending struggle – really, it feels that way. But just when we felt like giving up, the science and wellness Gods have brought us a shiny new solution, and this one, we are so on-board with.
So, have you ever heard of human rewilding?
Human re-what what?
In 2020, human rewilding is your new digital detox. According to experts, the term is taken from the field of nature conservancy. That’s right, it’s science-y.
In science, rewilding refers to the practice of allowing land to restore, repair and rebalance, in order to return to its natural, prosperous state. So, when you bring the ‘human’ bit in, rewilding basically becomes a practice for us to ‘restore, repair and rebalance’ our minds, hearts and bodies. The biggest point of call however? Disconnecting from our phones and reconnecting with nature.
Studies have shown how getting out into nature can do so much for our health: from lowering anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure, to improving mood, happiness and overall well being. Just two hours outside a week is enough to see tangible improvements in health, happiness and headspace.
Yet, in our distraction-filled lives, getting out into the soft sounds of nature can easily fall by the wayside. As a result, it can begin to feel like we haven’t really stopped to take time for ourselves.
But, how do we fight the distractions?
Out into the wild
We know what you’re thinking, surely the concept can’t be that difficult? Just get yourself into some fresh air!
Well, little did you know, there is in fact a university dedicated to the practice, aptly named ReWild University. Evidently, connecting with nature is much deeper than just switching off your smart devices.
At ReWild, they emphasise not just for us to be amongst nature, but also for us to understand that as humans, we are part of nature. It’s about getting in touch with ourselves, feeling at peace with our minds and our state in life, and therefore being able to enjoy the quiet moments to the fullest. (Without needing to check our phone every five seconds…)
In that way, rewilding undoubtedly comes hand-in-hand with awareness and mindfulness. The practice encourages you to notice how good it feels to take a step back, not just to do it because you know it’s good for you.
Rewilding, a guide:
So, how to do it.
Unplug and power off
Unplugging your devices is a power-move in this day and age. At critical points of stress, and especially before bed, giving technology a break is the best way to re-centre and re-energise.
Popping them to charge in another room, or just giving yourself an hour of no-technology time while you go for a walk or have a cup of tea can be just what your mind needs to wind-down. And it’ll totally help when bedtime rolls round too.
Find a green space
Even if it’s just a 20 minute walk to the park and back, the fresh air and new space will still work its all-natural magic.
Alternatively, walk around a garden, or patio – anywhere with some greenery and an open window.
Sit and breathe
For the ultimate detox, a ten minute sit-down in a quiet space is your fix.
Whether you’re seated by a window, or in the middle of a quiet garden, getting away from the hustle and bustle of work, offices or the city is the perfect way to settle your emotions and bring your mind to the fore. Take the time to listen to the quiet, enjoy it and tap into yourself for a little while.
