When winter rolls around, we tend to lose our summer glow – fast. None of us want dry skin or a dull complexion. Just because the winter air is crisp, doesn’t mean your skin has to be as well!
We may be in the depths of winter but with a few special tips and tricks, you can keep your skin glowing as bright as a summer’s day.
Here are some of our favourite savvy SWIISH skin savers…
Despite what some brands might tell you, some moisturisers can actually leave your skin even more dried-out than before. In winter, you want to go with an oil-based moisturiser with natural, nourishing ingredients like jojoba, lavender and chamomile. This will help to sooth dry, itchy skin and seal the moisture in.
The best way to get a great summer glow in winter? Fake it! Yep, fake tan is definitely your friend when it comes to staying bronzed all year long. Mix a bit in with your moisturiser and apply before bed, then wash it off in the morning for a subtle all-day glow. We personally love Model Co Airbrush Tan in a Can.
The best way to keep your skin glowing is to hydrate from the inside out. Make sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. We also like get a little extra liquid in our day with infused water and herbal teas (which happen to be super good for you too! Check out our turmeric tea right here).
A long, warm bath is an amazing way to wind-down in winter. What’s even better is when you get to combine relaxation and skin-rejuvenation in one! Almond oil contains vitamin A and E that help to hydrate your skin and cleanse your pores. It also kick starts the cell-renewal process and helps get rid of dead skin cells. Try mixing 250 grams of milk powder and half a cup of almond oil into your bath in order to reap the benefits. We also suggest lighting your fave scented candles and catching up on some reading whilst you’re at it. Bliss!
You’ll be amazed at how such a simple task can have such a staggering result. During winter, dry body brushing is pretty much a non-negotiable… Why? Well first off, it removes the dead layers of skin and other impurities. It also stimulates and increases blood circulation, helps rejuvenate cells, improves skin texture, strengthens the immune system and even helps release fatty deposits under the skins surface. And that’s only about half of the list of benefits…better get brushing!
DIY masks can provide needed moisture in the cooler months. The best part is, you probably already have all the ingredients at home! We love creating a super easy face mask (that also smells AMAZING) by mashing ½ avocado with ¼ cup honey, ¼ cup oats and 1 teaspoon melted coconut oil. Apply the mask to your entire face and leave on for 15 minutes before washing off to reveal super soft skin.
Soft, healthy skin begins on the inside and there are certain foods that will help you get a little extra glow. Healthy oils like almond, coconut and olive are amazing for your skin and are great to cook with. Eating Omega 3 fatty acids (found in oily fish like salmon) are also said to promote smoother, younger-looking skin. Some other surprising ones include garlic, which has anti-ageing and skin smoothing benefits and soy, which can promote collagen production.
Powder blushes and eyeshadows can actually enhance the appearance of dull, dry skin. One way around this is to use a spray bottle to spritz your makeup brush with a bit of water before dipping it into the powder. This will not only help your makeup stick better but it’ll also get rid of that dusty, chalky effect powders can have.
Highlighters are getting more and more use lately with the contouring trend in full swing. But in winter, they’re particularly useful for creating a gorgeous, faux glow. Stick to a liquid highlighter or illuminator to create a shiny, wet look and apply to your upper cheekbones, upper lip and down the centre of your nose. We love Estee Lauder’s Brush On Glow BB Highlighter.
