You can immediately change the look and feel of a room, making it romantic, uplifting or calming just by adding candles. Of course they look and smell amazing. But if you’re going to splurge on quality candles, how do you make the most out of them?
ECOYA candles are among my favourite, they’re made from soy wax and have cotton wicks, which might not sound like a big deal but it means cooler, cleaner burning … but also, very importantly, longer burning time (yay!).
More on how to get extra long burn time later, first why soy wax candles are so good. Well, they don’t contain any toxic chemicals and produce less emissions than paraffin candles (which are based from petroleum sources.)
Ok, so that’s good, but do you want a free beauty treatment with your candle? Let me explain. Because soy is high in isoflavins (a plant hormone that’s good for you), it has many benefits for the skin. Soy helps to stimulate collagen formation therefore improving elasticity, texture and the appearance of dry, irritated and dehydrated skin. But how does the candle give me a free beauty treatment I hear you ask? Well, due to the lower burning temperature of ECOYA’s soy wax candles you can dip your finger into the outer edge of the wax pool (NOT near the wick) and massage into hands, feet, knees, elbows etc. Your skin will feel and smell incredible. Nifty, huh?
Soy candles also burn at a lower temperature, making them burn for longer than paraffin candles, so from an economical standpoint, that’s pretty fantastic!
I sometimes like to treat myself and splurge on fancy candles but then find I’m too afraid to burn them, or worse yet, I light them and then as I see the candle start to disappear I quickly blow out the flame, in an attempt to keep the candle for longer. I also get disheartened when all the wax is left on the side and I never end up getting full use of the candle. Does that happen to you too? If so, turns out we are using the candle a little incorrectly.
Here are some tips to follow to help get the most out of your candle and stop any wastage:
- To ensure you get the most burn time out of your soy candle it’s best to trim the wick to 6mm before each lighting.
- Burn for approximately 2-3 hours or until the wax pool/puddle touches the edge of the glass (don’t blow it out until then). This ensures the candle burns flat and you don’t get wax stuck to the inside of the glass, that then never gets used.
So what I was doing wrong was only burning a small wax pool/puddle and then blowing the candle out. So the candle was holding that memory (who knew candles had memory?!)and would then only burn and funnel down the centre, increasing wastage and decreasing the burn time!!
Soooo, the moral of the story – splurge on good candles and actually use them, enjoy them … life’s too short not to.
