It’s no secret that ballerinas are incredibly fit, toned and strong. Their work requires them to be absolute guns at what they do so their regular workouts are obviously paramount in their daily routine.
If you always wanted to be a ballerina but never got the opportunity (we hear you!), there’s a workout you can do that is inspired by ballet: barre. Barre classes have gained popularity over the past few years and you’d be hard to find a suburb that doesn’t have a barre studio or two. But with everyone’s busy schedules and the demands of everyday life, we know how hard it can be to get to a class a few times a week, let alone once a week!
But as Maria would say, let’s start at the very beginning. What is barre? It’s talked about so frequently and you’ve probably heard about it but you might not know what it is exactly. Let us explain. Most barre classes are a workout that combine the best of yoga, pilates and ballet. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on strength training. Many barre classes will also use props like small handheld weights, exercise balls and bands. Half an hour of barre will really have all the muscles in your body fired up – it’s definitely not a workout for the faint-hearted!
If you want to start barre but you don’t want to commit to a studio membership or if you struggle to get to a class once a week, don’t worry because we are here to help. We’ve done all the hard work for you and have trawled the internet finding the best barre workouts you can do at home! The beauty of doing barre at home is that you don’t have to commit to a one hour class; you can do it for as a little or as long as you’d like. The other redeeming factor is the cost. These workouts are free! So if you don’t mind working out in your living room, this is the workout for you!
Happy pirouette-ing!
