Whether your skin is naturally dry, or is suffering from dehydration, there are some quick DIY ways to fix dry skin. These five ways take little effort and best of all are inexpensive to do.
Oatmeal Bath SoakMany moisturising lotions and beauty products contain oatmeal for its miraculous healing powers to the skin. With a combination of fatty acids, proteins and vitamins not only does oatmeal prevent dryness, it helps reduce inflammation and maintains the skin’s natural barrier function. Take 4 cups of oats (not instant oats, just the plain old-fashioned kind) and blitz in a blender until you get a fine powder consistency. This is known as colloidal oatmeal. Half fill a bath mitt with the colloidal oatmeal and secure it to the running tap with a hair tie or a piece of string. Use warm water as hot water dehydrates skin further. Let the water run through the oats for a silky, milky luxurious bath soak. Soak in the tub for 15-20 minutes. swiish tip: when making your colloidal oatmeal, add a handful of dried lavender buds to the blender to add a beautiful, relaxing scent.
Coconut OilWant younger looking skin? Forget expensive “miracle” creams and serums and opt for coconut oil instead. Coconut oil benefits aging skin with its emollient, re-hydrating and elasticising properties. Apply extra virgin coconut oil immediately after your shower or bath whilst skin is still moist. Rub in extra on dry spots, like elbows and legs. Massage into your skin until it’s completely absorbed. For extra dry feet, apply coconut oil before you go to bed and wear thick cotton socks to hold in the moisture. You can buy virgin coconut oil from health food stores or online from Discount Health Foods or Shop Naturally.
Choc Face MaskCocoa powder is considered good for skin because it is rich in antioxidants. It rejuvenates dull skin, making it appear softer, smoother and glowing. Mix together one heaped tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder with approx half a cup of cream (use full cream, not a lite cream) to form a paste. Apply to clean, dry skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Wipe off mask with washcloth. Rinse face with lukewarm water and pat dry. swiish tip: This choc face mask is also great to help soothe sunburn!
Peanut Butter SalveGoing through a rough patch? Dry patches of skin on chin, mouth, nose and hands can be treated by peanut butter. Wash the area gently with soap and cool water. Pat dry with a towel. Apply a layer of peanut butter to the dry skin area and leave it on for about 10 – 15 minutes. Wipe away with a damp towel (don’t rub) and then rinse off the residue with gentle soap and warm water. Repeat this 3 times per week on the dry areas.
Sweet Honey LipsIf you have dry lips, simply apply a little organic honey to them in the evening and wake up to smooth, yummy lips. swiish tip: This trick also works to soothe cracked heels and rough elbows. |
