As dedicated SWIISH readers might know, we’re always onto what’s new and must-know in health. And when it comes to superfoods, no matter whether it’s a veggie, a seed, a powder or some crazy hybrid fruit, we’re on board. But what we want to share with you today however, is actually none of the above. Instead, it’s something we’ve all had access to for ages, but kept throwing away!
Introducing broccoleaf – the superfood that’s set to give kale a run for its money. Due to their amazing nutritional and detoxifying properties, farmers have been adding broccoli leaves to their soil for years. Well unsurprisingly what’s good for the earth is also good for your body also.
This incredible broccoli by-product is packed full of antioxidants, minerals, phytonutrients and vitamins A and K. It’s also higher in calcium than both kale and the broccoli florets themselves. Sounds pretty super to us!
Another big reason broccoleaf is gaining acclaim is because it promotes the use of the entire broccoli vegetable, not just the florets. This helps to cut down our food wastage, while opening up a whole new vegetable category at the same time. Hoorayyy sustainability!
The best part though is that this awesome ‘new’ veggie is super versatile AND super delish. You can sauté it, throw it in a stir-fry, massage the leaves with oil for a salad, or toss them in your blender for a smoothie. The possibilities are endless.
While broccoleaf hasn’t yet hit Australian supermarkets, we’ve got no doubt that when it does, it’ll be selling by the bagful. In the meantime though, you can get your hands on these leaves the old fashioned way – by pulling them off your broccoli! We recommend heading down to your local farmers market, as they’re usually the ones with the freshest, leafiest broccoli.
