Move over Zumba, there’s a new cardio kid in town – Cardio Tennis!
This exciting high-energy program involves a series of tennis based drills and activities played to up tempo music on a tennis court. And the best part is that you don’t have to be Serena Williams to enjoy this energising workout! Cardio Tennis doesn’t actually require you to have existing tennis skills; it’s all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having a good time!
An average session lasts between 45 minutes and an hour, and is broken up into three parts:
- First there’s a 5 – 10 minute warm up, consisting of dynamic movements, tossing and catching skills and light hitting.
- Then there’s the workout – for the next 30 – 50 minutes, it’s all about drill-based and play-based activities. This is where you’ll be busting some serious calories.
- Finally, there’s a 5 – 10 minute cool down session, designed to lower the heart rate while still incorporating tennis specific activities, which also help to cool down your muscles.
Players wear heart rate monitors, use low-compression balls and a variety of equipment, including agility ladders. And at the end of your session, you can check your stats on the heart-rate monitor to find out just how hard you worked.
And you’ll have worked pretty hard! During a Cardio Tennis session, you could hit up to 1000 balls with your racket. No wonder women will burn between 1260 and 2100 kilojoules per hour! Incredible right?
And not only that, but it’s actually really fun. And because it’s interactive too, the hour session flies by. You can go on your own and meet new people there, or grab a bunch of mates and take them along with you. We reckon Cardio Tennis will fast become one of your favourite workouts!
